Rio Tinto – Marandoo Mine WA

Rio Tinto Mining Industry project

Mining in a remove and harsh environment, Rio Tinto needed a company they could rely on to get the job done no matter the site complications, so they called Levanta and we delivered.

Project Challenge

Based on our successful completion of a previous project, Rio Tinto required a solution to lift a wide range of heavy and light vehicles in a remote and harsh environment in the Pilbara Iron Ore mining region of Western Australia. The site is subject to high concentrations of red Iron Ore dust, high winds, cyclones and extreme temperatures.

Our Solution

Levanta supplied an OMER KAR350-10 35 ton 10 metre Knuckle Lift 3 years ago to RTIO it has performed without any faults to date, and has only required standard annual certification checks. This hoist is used daily to lift prime movers, trucks, buses, various items of plant and some light vehicles.

Client Benefit

Rio Tinto received a high availability, safe lifting solution that to this day still delivers, even in the extremely harsh environment that they have to work in.

RIO TINTO – Amrun

Levanta completes lube fitout for FNQ mining workshop

Rio Tinto is investing $2.6 billion in their Amrun metal-grade bauxite mine in the Weipa region of Far North Queensland.

As part of this massive operation they required a Heavy Vehicle maintenance workshop, complete with the reticulation of major lubricants and coolant. Rio Tinto engaged Levanta to design, fabricate, supply, install and commission the required facility.

Levanta provided the complete set of drawings, manuals and documentation to the specification of the principal builder (Decmil), the EPCM (Bechtel) and the company (Rio Tinto).

Comprehensive, user-friendly workshop lubrication systems

Levanta supplied the complete lubrication package, incorporating two containerised lubrication storage and pumping systems. The lubrication system was reticulated to both the mobile equipment maintenance (MEM) workshop and Haulmax bay.

The project included the fabrication, supply and installation of two bunded lube containers, fitted out with air operated pumps, piping, control, valves and labelling, as well as portable mobile oil stores (tanks).

Levanta also supplied, installed, and commissioned three full featured packaged compressed air systems to the MEM, Haulmax and tyre bay.

Five reel racks were installed complete with large 23m hose reels, including new oil, waste oil, coolant, and air hoses. Most of the hose reels are spring-return, but with the larger, heavier hoses (40mm in diameter and 23 metres long), Levanta added powered pneumatic retraction to ensure a more user-friendly and efficient retraction operation.

Safety and efficiency the primary considerations

The system had extensive protection in terms of thermal relief valves, pneumatic controlled isolation valves, and control points at each reel rack. The oil pumps themselves are protected by Pump Runaway Protection Devices. In the event that the oil runs low in tank, this device will stop the pump and prevent it from damaging itself.

Electric cut-off solenoids (which need to be manually switched on for oil dispensing) provided an additional level of safety.

Tank level monitoring and alarms prevent over-filling and enable management of refilling and ordering in of new supplies in good time.

Levanta also supplied and installed all piping, labelling, tagging, drawing mark-ups, shop drawings, MDR, commissioning documentation and manuals.

Levanta completes new turnkey fitout for Bill Buckle Auto Group

Holistic approach delivers workshop efficiencies

Levanta has completed a brand new VW and Toyota workshop facility incorporating 28 bays for Bill Buckle Auto Group in Brookvale NSW.

The client’s previous workshop, housed in a 22 bay sawtooth building dating from the early 90s, was demolished to make way for their all-new facility. During the new building’s construction, staff and equipment were relocated to a temporary facility to give the Group time and space to create their ideal layout.

With a ‘clean sheet’ to work from, Bill Buckle Auto Group collaborated with Levanta to plan their ideal new workshop layout.

An integrated workshop encompassing two OEMs

Levanta worked with Bill Buckle Auto Group and their architect over a two year period, getting involved right from the initial planning stages. The exacting process included many face-to-face meetings and had a major focus on incorporating efficiency for their technicians.

One interesting challenge was that Bill Buckle Auto Group’s workshop bays needed to handle a diverse range of vehicles, from the smaller Polo cars right up to larger delivery vans like the long wheelbase Crafter or the Amarok ute.

To meet this need Levanta provided Jager 2 post hoists, scissor lifts that allowed wide-open door access for “under-dash” work, and knuckle lifts for wheel alignment services.

Designing and delivering a comprehensive turnkey workshop fitout

The Levanta team incorporated fully reticulated oils, air, and water to every bay. Additionally three bays were fitted with exhaust extraction equipment via a pull-out hose that clipped onto the vehicle exhaust pipe.

Since the Auto Group handles two different OEMs – VW and Toyota – Levanta’s design incorporated two separate workshops, located either side of the administration facilities.

Each workshop was correctly colour coded according to the OEM’s Corporate Identity requirements, and Dura workshop furniture from the UK offered a high-class and professional finish.

Military Barracks – Liverpool NSW

Government facility project Military Barracks – Liverpool NSW

Looking for a safe and reliable maintenance facility for their light to medium plant, The Australian Defence force and John Holland construction engaged Levanta based on our experience and history of the right solution for the job. Brake testers, lubrication, exhaust extraction and compressed air systems were designed, supplied and installed in this defence project.

Project Challenge

The Client, John Holland Constructions and the Australian Defence Force, were building a new maintenance facility for their light to medium plant. They required a high availability lube reticulation system, exhaust extraction system and compressed air. In addition they also identified the need for a safe and reliable solution for lifting a wide range of vehicles and other equipment, as well as a roller brake tester and tyre changer for medium vehicles.

Our Solution

The project went to tender and Levanta was successful in their bid as a sub-contractor to a Sydney Based company that was doing the HVAC and other engineering systems for the hydrocarbon (oil) reticulation and compressed air work packages. We were also successful in a direct bid for the Lifting, Brake Testing and Tyre Changer package.

Fulton Hogan – Dandenong VIC

Government facility project Fulton Hogan – Dandenong VIC

Servicing a wide range of multi-axle width and length vehicles, Fulton Hogan called on Levanta to offer advice on the best solution for the space allocated, the servicing needs and the timeline restrictions, while maintaining cost effectiveness and existing servicing operations.

Project Challenge

The Client had a requirement to service a wide range of vehicles from Trucks and Light vehicles to machines used to lay Asphalt and other civil equipment. Due to the wide range of vehicles, track widths and weights, a hoist was determined to not be suitable. Levanta was asked to visit the site and provide suggestions for a suitable solution which would meet the needs of the client and keep the costs to a minimum.

Our Solution

The Levanta Project Team suggested using a pre-fabricated pit to allow any vehicle in the FH fleet to be serviced without the need to be lifted up. The pre-fabricated pit, allowed for much of the time consuming elements of the build to be completed prior to the concrete slab being cut and the pit excavation done. This allowed FH to continue their routine maintenance operations until the day before the pit was installed. The pit was built with all internal features such as lighting and ventilation already installed so it was simply a matter of positioning the pit in the excavation, connecting services such as electricity, air and the exhaust fan ducting and back filling the excavation. The concrete slab was then re-instated and the job was completed in 3 days. The alternative solution of either casting a pit on site or building it from blocks would have taken around 2 weeks.
