How an Efficient Workshop Improves your Bottom Line

Did you know that by increasing the efficiency of your workshop, you will automatically increase your bottom line?

Quite simply, the more work you can complete in the same number of hours, the more your bottom line increases.

To create an efficient workshop a lot of thought needs to be put into the layout of where items and equipment need to be placed for it to be the most efficient for your team and business. In this article, we share our top 6 ways to make your workshop more efficient and well equipped, to hence improve your bottom line.

Our top 6 ways to improve workshop efficiency

1. Drive through bays:

To enable heavy vehicles to save time by easily allowing them to be driven in and out. Reversing heavy vehicles is deemed a safety risk by some operators, so needs to be avoided where possible.

2. Have Commonly Used Items in a Central Location:

It is ideal to limit the walking distance to obtain regular tools, oils, grease etc. Having these items centrally located between the bays means they are easily obtained without effort or time.

3. Place Amenities in a Central Location:

Some workshops can be large, so consideration needs to be made on whether amenities such as toilets, basins etc are centrally located. If you have a large truck workshop and the amenities are located near the offices, it could be 15 mins away for a technician to wash their hands.

4. Workshop Pits:

These can be very good at improving efficiencies as a vehicle can drive onto the pit, drop waste oil, jack up and change wheels, attend to bearing or adjust brakes. The main efficiency of a workshop pit is that technicians can be working at workshop level at the same time they are under the vehicle. This means more work can be done simultaneously.

5. Hoists:

These can make complex heavy repair work much more efficient. By hoisting the vehicle in the air, your visibility is increased with natural light. Working height can be adjusted to suit the job and working on a flat workshop floor reduces hazards.

6. Diagnostic tools:

These include Roller Brake Testers and Play Detectors which can improve efficiencies and profits. They can be used to diagnose the potential failure of components before they happen, helping repairers reduce downtime and provide the up sell.

As you can see, by making small changes to the way you layout your workshop, you’ll be able to run your shop more efficiently and watch your bottom line improve.

Our ‘Must Have’ Workshop Products

Did you know that European workshop products lead the world in quality and safety?

This is because they go through the most stringent process to meet the EU standards. These standards are typically more advanced than US and Australian standards and that’s why we, at Levanta, import and sell leading European workshop products.

Compliance for Australian Standards is still required in every case; however, products will very easily obtain Australian compliance if they have already met the EU standard.

So, what are the ‘must have’ workshop equipment and products that every heavy vehicle workshop should have?

The 7 Must Have Heavy Vehicle Workshop Products:

1. Transmission Jacks

These make the difficult job of handling heavy and awkward transmissions easier. Our transmission jacks are sturdy enough to be wheeled around the workshop, have adjustments that can change height and angle to make the job of re-installing the transmission much easier.

floor jack

2. Workshop Floor Jacks

These quickly free a wheel. Our workshop floor jacks are air operated so they can be quickly connected to compressed air anywhere in the workshop. We have a range of floor jacks, including:

3. Pit Jacks

These roll the full length of the pit to allow the vehicle to be jacked anywhere in the pit. Technicians only need to push one carriage up and down the pit instead of positioning two jacks (one on each side).

4. Hoists

These are important to lift vehicles safely. We have many different options to choose from but our top ‘must haves’ include:

  • 4 Post Hoists
  • Mobile Column Lifts – these can be wheeled around like pallet jacks to save space and be used anywhere in the workshop
  • Knuckle Lifts – these can lift to 54 tonnes with no posts, can be recessed flat into the floor if required. They are perfect if you need to lift B-doubles or buses

5. Jacking Beams

These help you achieve the most out of your vehicle lift and dramatically increase your service abilities. You’ll be able to change tyres easily and safely, without the wheels rolling everywhere.

6. Roller Brake Testers

These are used as a diagnostic tool as well as compliance. Diagnostic work can be just as important as compliance because it can put up component failure before it happens. This means less time with issues on the side of the road.

7. Wheel Alignment Machines

These can be used and completed very quickly and without a lot of expertise. They provide an extra revenue source for repairers or fleets and can also assist in saving tyres wear, fuel consumption and driver fatigue.

So, there you have it, our must have list of heavy vehicle workshop equipment.

How Our Fit Outs Meet the Strict Corporate Identity Requirements

Whether you’re designing a new workshop fit out, or thinking of re-fitting an existing one, there are many factors to consider. However, one of the most crucial requirements is the need to meet the strict Corporate Identity standards.

Global vehicle manufacturers have spent millions to create a Corporate Identity that clearly portrays their brand to potential customers. So, whether your workshop needs a refurbishment, expansion, or a completely new fit out, it’s important to look at this as an opportunity and follow our below advice.

Our Advice to meet Strict Corporate Identity Requirements

1. Don’t substitute with a cheaper brand

If you’re working with a European manufacturer, standards will be high. They will often stipulate a particular brand of equipment, or a precise colour from a certain manufacturer.

It can be tempting to substitute with a cheaper brand to save money, however these cheaper brands simply don’t measure up – leaving you with more costs to rectify the work.

2. Choose a supplier with expertise

Choosing to partner with a supplier with expertise working within corporate identity guidelines means you will design a workshop fit out right the first time. And with rebates on offer for meeting their requirements, this can save you money in the long term.

3. Don’t let your fit out become an expensive nightmare

Choosing a supplier who can work within your corporate identity requirements and deliver a solution that meets them, you can achieve a workshop fit out that:

  • Looks the part
  • Helps you deliver a better service for your customers
  • Doesn’t drain your resources
  • Becomes an investment

4. Understand the client’s requirements & budget

To be successful you must understand the client’s requirements as well as their budget. You also need a deep understanding of the relevant Corporate Identity requirements and a relationship with the OEM. This enables a successful fit out supplier to work with everyone involved and come up with a solution that ticks all the boxes.

Levanta completes new turnkey fitout for Bill Buckle Auto Group

Holistic approach delivers workshop efficiencies

Levanta has completed a brand new VW and Toyota workshop facility incorporating 28 bays for Bill Buckle Auto Group in Brookvale NSW.

The client’s previous workshop, housed in a 22 bay sawtooth building dating from the early 90s, was demolished to make way for their all-new facility. During the new building’s construction, staff and equipment were relocated to a temporary facility to give the Group time and space to create their ideal layout.

With a ‘clean sheet’ to work from, Bill Buckle Auto Group collaborated with Levanta to plan their ideal new workshop layout.

An integrated workshop encompassing two OEMs

Levanta worked with Bill Buckle Auto Group and their architect over a two year period, getting involved right from the initial planning stages. The exacting process included many face-to-face meetings and had a major focus on incorporating efficiency for their technicians.

One interesting challenge was that Bill Buckle Auto Group’s workshop bays needed to handle a diverse range of vehicles, from the smaller Polo cars right up to larger delivery vans like the long wheelbase Crafter or the Amarok ute.

To meet this need Levanta provided Jager 2 post hoists, scissor lifts that allowed wide-open door access for “under-dash” work, and knuckle lifts for wheel alignment services.

Designing and delivering a comprehensive turnkey workshop fitout

The Levanta team incorporated fully reticulated oils, air, and water to every bay. Additionally three bays were fitted with exhaust extraction equipment via a pull-out hose that clipped onto the vehicle exhaust pipe.

Since the Auto Group handles two different OEMs – VW and Toyota – Levanta’s design incorporated two separate workshops, located either side of the administration facilities.

Each workshop was correctly colour coded according to the OEM’s Corporate Identity requirements, and Dura workshop furniture from the UK offered a high-class and professional finish.

New Rockhampton Bridgestone franchise fitted out by Levanta

In-house project management team delivers improved efficiencies

Levanta has handed over a brand new, full turn-key workshop fitout for Bridgestone’s Rockhampton branch.

The Bridgestone B-Select franchisee carried out extensive research before locking in a supplier, and spoke to several of Levanta’s previous clients. Their feedback convinced the franchisee to select Levanta for the workshop fitout job.

Andrew Walsh, Bridgestone Australia’s Auto Service Advisor for Queensland, said, “We engaged Levanta because we wanted to partner with an industry-recognised supplier of quality equipment, and somebody who was able to maintain our standards within the partnership.”

The workshop – a new build from the ground up – had to comply with Bridgestone’s Corporate Identity requirements. “It was a “turn-key” build, everything from the floors to brand new equipment, colour matched specifically for Bridgestone,” said Andrew.

Backup service and support for the new equipment would be critically important to the new franchisee. Levanta’s national support network was another key factor in their decision.

Quality workshop equipment and seamless fitouts from Levanta

Bridgestone’s Andrew Walsh summarised the fitout experience: “Everything was very transparent and seamless. I would recommend Levanta to anybody that is looking at establishing a business and wanting to fit it out with new, quality equipment,” he said.

Levanta works with major tyre retailers, dealership chains, the mining industry and many other clients throughout Australia. Our team of fitout experts have the experience to deliver a custom design that meets and exceeds your business’s requirements.

Levanta fitout team works closely alongside Bridgestone

Thanks to Levanta’s in-house project management team, the communication process with Bridgestone’s project management team and the new franchisee was very clear. This took some of the pressure off Bridgestone’s national team to ensure a smooth and timely delivery of the project.

Although the new Bridgestone B-Select franchisee did have prior experience in service stations, they were new to the tyre business. That meant they needed a workshop partner that could recommend the right equipment for the business – not simply supplying a ‘cookie cutter’ design used at other sites.

“With wheel alignments it’s very important to get a car in and out as quickly as possible,” Andrew said. “There’s expectations as to how long they are going to wait for an alignment, so it needs to be streamlined.”

While Bridgestone B-Select have a standard layout for their tyre workshops, Levanta were able to design a slightly better layout for this site, by identifying some specific efficiencies.

And of course, as a brand new business it was extremely important that the workshop fitout delivered the best possible ROI for the budget.

“Where Levanta did quite well was ensuring that the tyre fitting machines were in place in front of the fitting bays,” Andrew said. “This ensured that care of ease and workplace health and safety were all taken into account for the fitters.”
